Saint Margaret Mercy Healthcare Centers names January GEMs

January 26, 2006

HAMMOND/DYER—Calumet City resident Ukema Cherry and Schererville resident Diane Paetsch are the January GEMs (Going the Extra Mile) at Saint Margaret Mercy.

Co-workers describe Ukema Cherry, nursing assistant on 2 East Telemetry at the Hammond campus, as one who treats each person in her care as the only one who matters. She is always willing to do more than her share. She brightens the day for all who cross her path. Her supervisor said that she joyfully provides meticulous care. She is a true team player and an asset to the unit and to Saint Margaret Mercy. Cherry has been employed at the hospital since March 2003.

Co-workers describe Diane Paetsch, MSO Billing, as one who has time for everyone yet gets her job done. She never judges and always makes everyone feel special. Her supervisor said that Paetsch is the epitome of a Saint Margaret Mercy GEM. She sets high standards for herself and is always striving to meet them. She willingly accepts new challenges to improve processes.

Saint Margaret Mercy's monthly GEM award is designed to show appreciation for hospital employees who consistently perform their duties while treating others with respect, dignity, fairness and compassion. Peers anonymously nominate those employees who best exemplify the mission and philosophy of the hospital.

Winners of the GEM award receive a reserved parking space for one month, a recognition pin, certificate of award and an invitation to attend an annual luncheon with the president of the hospital. President Tom Gryzbek states: "Many of our employees go that extra mile to provide quality care to our patients. The GEM award is one way we can recognize their efforts."
