HAMMOND/DYER -- U.S. News & World Report recently released its 12th annual listing of “America’s Best Hospitals,” ranked according to 17 separate specialties. Saint Margaret Mercy Healthcare Centers is partnered with two of the named hospitals -- Children’s Memorial Hospital and University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC).

Children’s Memorial Hospital earned the distinction of being ranked number 11 out of 100 pediatric hospitals nationwide. In 2000, Saint Margaret Mercy partnered with Children’s Memorial to manage its Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) in Hammond.

Through this union, Saint Margaret Mercy is able to offer more pediatric services than any other facility in Northwest Indiana and Southeast Chicagoland. Those services include the Children’s Memorial Telemedicine Project. The Telemedicine Project is a real-time transmission of cardiac diagnostic testing which links Children’s Memorial Hospital pediatric cardiologists with remote sites.

Additionally, University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) was ranked number 46 out of 100 of U.S. News & World Report’s best hospitals for neurology/neurosurgery. Earlier this year,

Saint Margaret Mercy opened the Brain & Spine Institute at its North Campus. Heading the Brain & Spine Institute is a team of neurosurgeons affiliated with UIC. They bring new discoveries and advances in the field of neurosurgery to physicians and patients at Saint Margaret Mercy, in a word—superspecialties. The UIC team brings expertise in:

  1. Spine surgery
  2. Surgery for degenerative spine
  3. Complex spine surgery
  4. Instrumentation, including pedicle screws and Ray Cages®
